Exploiting Relaxation in Local Search

چکیده

Branch-and-bound uses relaxation to prune search trees but sometimes scales poorly to large problems. Conversely, local search often scales well but may be unable to find optimal solutions, perhaps because it does not exploit relaxation. Both phenomena occur in the construction of low-autocorrelation binary sequences, a problem arising in communication engineering. This paper proposes a hybrid approach to optimization: using relaxation to prune local search spaces. An implementation gives competitive results, showing the feasibility of the approach.

Variable neighbourhood decomposition search for 0-1 mixed integer programs

In this paper we propose a new hybrid heuristic for solving 0-1 mixed integer programs based on the principle of variable neighbourhood decomposition search. It combines variable neighbourhood search with a general-purpose CPLEX MIP solver. We perform systematic hard variable fixing (or diving) following the variable neighbourhood search rules. The variables to be fixed are chosen according to ...

Relaxation Labeling for Selecting and Exploiting Efficiently Non-local Dependencies in Sequence Labeling

We consider the problem of sequence labeling and propose a two steps method which combines the scores of local classifiers with a relaxation labeling technique. This framework can account for sparse dynamically changing dependencies, which allows us to efficiently discover relevant non-local dependencies and exploit them. This is in contrast to existing models which incorporate only local relat...

Exploiting semidefinite relaxations in constraint programming

Constraint programming uses enumeration and search tree pruning to solve combinatorial optimization problems. In order to speed up this solution process, we investigate the use of semidefinite relaxations within constraint programming. In principle, we use the solution of a semidefinite relaxation to guide the traversal of the search tree, using a limited discrepancy search strategy. Furthermor...

Local Search Topology in Planning Benchmarks: An Empirical Analysis

Many state-of-the-art heuristic planners derive their heuristic function by relaxing the planning task at hand, where the relaxation is to assume that all delete lists are empty. Looking at a collection of planning benchmarks, we measure topological properties of state spaces with respect to that relaxation. The results suggest that, given the heuristic based on the relaxation, many planning be...

The quadratic minimum spanning tree problem: A lower bounding procedure and an efficient search algorithm

In this work we address the Quadratic Minimum Spanning Tree Problem (QMSTP) known to be NP-hard. Given a complete graph, the QMSTP consists of determining a minimum spanning tree (MST) considering interaction costs between pairs of edges to be modelled. A Lagrangian relaxation procedure is devised and an efficient local search algorithm with tabu thresholding is developed. Computational experim...
